Magnetic storage media such as LTO, DAT and DLT Tapes, Disks, Video Cassettes etc, are an old way of storing and accessing data. Some of them such as Floppy Disks and Video Cassettes are slowly disappearing due to their small storage space, size and difficulty of playback.
However, there are still several companies, and perhaps some individuals, that store and keep files on new technology Tapes (LTO Tapes, DAT Tapes, DLT Tapes, AIC Tapes, QIC Tapes) that have more storage capacity than hard disks (considering their size), they are quite reliable and very durable. The destruction of these materials occurs in the following ways:
Firstly by degaussing*
Secondly by physical destruction,
using a special shredder for the best possible effect (up to 2mm). You may request a sample of the product from a previous shredding to examine the result.
If required by the file owner, our business may apply both methods where possible. For example Reel Tapes do not fit in the degausser. Furthermore, these materials are not recycled and our business has to pay to dispose of them, so there is a cost to destroying these materials. Our billing varies depending on the type of materials, their quantity, the means of destruction and the way they are collected. After consulting with our business, the interested person can be present and monitor the entire destruction process.
*degaussing is only performed on the following types of Tapes DLT, S-DLT, LTO1,2,3,4 & 5; 3480/3490/3490e, 3590, 9840 & T9940 & T10000 tape; Ultrium & Redwood SD-3 tape & cartridges; Mammoth 1 & 2, 8mm, AIT1 & 2,M2 tape; DDS 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5, DD-2 & DFT-1 & 2.
